Ela Bhatt was an Indian leading women’s empowerment activist and renowned founder of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA). She was the Chairperson of Sabarmati Ashram.
She started her career as an English Teacher for a short time at SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai. Later she joined the legal department of the Textile Labour Association (TLA) in Ahmedabad.
Ela Bhatt has also worked for a long time with the Swashrayee Mahila Seva Sangh. That organization was established on his behalf. From 1972 to 1996, she worked as the General Secretary of this organization.
